Introduction on CHAMPION Project
Comprehensive HIV-Prevention Among MARPs by Promoting Integrated Outreach and Networking (CHAMPTION) is one of PPAT’s prominent projects. PPAT is selected as Sub-Recipient (SR) from Global Fund Round 8 (2009-2014). The Global Fund was founded by the initiative of the UN in 2002. It is a unique global public/private partnership dedicated to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. These 3 diseases have caused in about 6 millions deaths each year. At the moment, the Global Fund is financially subsidized by 57 countries and approved funding for programs in 144 countries. The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases.
CHAMPION targets on female sex workers (FSW) by campaigning FSW to use condoms to prevent HIV/STD infection. The project is being implemented in 41 provinces nationwide. PPAT functions as both project implementer and monitor of Sub-Sub-Recipient (SSR) which is comprised with 6 NGOs namely Empower Foundation, SWING Foundation, Foundation for AIDS Rights (FAR), NET Foundation, Population and Community Development Association (PDA) and Social Development Association (SDA). As FSWs have high risk of HIV/AIDS infection, PPAT and partner organizations have campaigned and educated FSWs in 41 provinces to use condoms in order to prevent HIV infection. PPAT also trained volunteers in the target areas on STD/HIV as well as created awareness of using condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS infection.
